In January and February, Microsoft’s online services had a disruption in certain products they provide to users across North America and other countries.
The first outage affecting Microsoft products occurred on January 25, 2023. The services impacted during that outage were Outlook, Teams, Microsoft Exchange Online, SharePoint Online and OneDrive for Business. After completing an investigation, Microsoft shared via its Twitter handle, @MSFT365Status, that they believed certain rollbacks to their network is what caused the outage, which also included outages in Japan, Australia, India and the UK.
Microsoft stated that users began noticing issues with Outlook and Teams again on Tuesday, February 7, 2023, around 4:04 GMT (which would be 11:04 p.m. on February 6, 2023). Users who use these services were unable to access, send, receive, and search their email account and also view calendar information. The users affected were primarily in North America, but some users in India, UK, Israel and Austria were also affected.
After the second outage and investigation, Microsoft tweeted that were taking steps to protect their infrastructure, and exploring other ways they could restore services quickly. Additionally, they began restarting operations to the affected services in North America. Microsoft indicated that when the issues in North America were resolved, the users in other countries would also start seeing their services restored.
Both outages occurred shortly after Microsoft announced it would be rolling out a subscription tier to the Microsoft 365 bundle. The first tier rolled out on January 30 and offered “Microsoft 365 Basic” where users would be able to have 100GB of cloud storage and ad-free web and mobile Outlook. The price is $1.99 a month or $19.99 a year. Microsoft released a premium version of Teams, called “Microsoft Teams Premium,” in early February 2023. The premium version is expected to let users create meetings specific to their needs, incorporate AI into meetings and provide enhanced security features to keep meetings confidential.
