In 2020, OpenAI released GPT-3. GPT-3 was designed to understand human language and create content that is consistent with human language as opposed to a computer-based response. In 2022, OpenAI expanded that capability even further with ChatGPT. Since the inception of both platforms, educators have seen an increase in students using these tools in written essays and other correspondence. To help detect and identify AI usage, Turnitin is developing software based upon the same principles as AI. This will give educators the ability and flexibility to identify content based upon the writing pattern presented in a paper or essay. Although based upon the AI principle, instead of continuing the language pattern, Turnitin identifies and predicts whether the language written was generated from a GPT-3 model. Educators know that students are using ChatGPT on their assignments. There are mixed reviews and opinions from end-to-end. On one hand, does it help students better their writing skills or is it a way to cheat and plagiarize and get their paper done faster? There are even arguments that say students will rely on ChatGPT so much that they won’t be able to solve their own problems. What students are also not realizing in their eagerness to use ChatGPT is that it can be misleading, can give bogus information, fake citations, and sometimes no answer at all. Some schools in a few States have even blocked students from accessing ChatGPT on their networks. No matter the opinions from educators, Turnitin’s objective is to present its software to educators so they can get hands-on experience and provide feedback to make the ChatGPT tool successful and not be misused.
